My Remote Desktop Feels Slow or Laggy
Practical tips to enhance the speed and performance of your remote desktop experience for smoother operation.

Use this article if: your remote desktop session feels slow, your mouse or keyboard inputs are delayed, or you keep getting disconnected.
How long this takes: 10 to 15 minutes to work through the steps below.
Slowness in a remote desktop is almost always a network issue on the local side — your internet connection, Wi-Fi signal, or equipment. The steps below cover the most common causes, starting with the fastest fixes.
Try these first
1. Switch to a wired connection
If you are on Wi-Fi, connect your computer directly to your router using an ethernet cable. Wi-Fi is convenient but introduces inconsistent delays, especially with multiple devices on the network.
2. Restart your router
Unplug your router from the power outlet, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully restart, then reconnect.
3. Close other apps using the internet
Video streaming, large downloads, and cloud backups running in the background will compete for bandwidth. Close any you don't need during your work session.
4. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router
If switching to ethernet (wired connection) is not possible, try moving your computer closer to the router to get a stronger signal.
If those didn't help
5. Run a speed test
Go to speedtest.net and run a test. For a reasonable remote desktop experience you need at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, with a ping (latency) under 100 ms. If your results are much lower, contact your internet provider.
6. Check if the issue is only at certain times
Network congestion often peaks in evenings and weekends when more people in your area are online. If performance is fine in the morning but slow in the afternoon, a higher-speed plan from your provider is usually the fix.
7. Check your equipment
Routers older than 3 to 4 years may not support the speeds your internet plan provides. If your provider has confirmed the connection is fast but your router is old, replacing it may resolve the issue.
