Juno Update Asking for Administrator Credentials
Last updated: June 2026
Use this article if:
A user sees a prompt asking for administrator credentials when Juno tries to update, and the update fails or gets stuck.

The administrator credentials prompt that appears during a system-wide Juno update attempt.
How long this takes:
Around 15 minutes.
Why this happens
Juno can be installed in two ways, and only one of them causes this problem:
l User profile install ("Only for me"): The app is installed under the individual user's profile folder. Updates happen automatically without any admin rights. This is the correct method for shared RDP environments.
l Machine-level install ("All users"): The app is installed to C:\Program Files and is shared across all users. Any update to this installation requires Administrator credentials — which end users typically don't have.
The fix is to uninstall the machine-level copy and reinstall Juno per user.
What to do
Step 1: Check where Juno is currently installed
Look in both locations:
l User profile install: %LOCALAPPDATA% or %APPDATA% (i.e., C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local and C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming). A Juno folder here means a user-specific install.
l Machine-level install: C:\Program Files. A Juno folder here means the app was installed for all users.
Note: If Juno folders appear in both locations, the install method cannot be determined from the folder alone. A registry check would be needed. Skip to Step 3 and proceed with the reinstall either way.
Step 2: Confirm the machine-level install is the issue
If C:\Program Files contains a Juno folder and the user does not have admin rights, this is the cause. Proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Uninstall the existing Juno installation
Press Win + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
Find Juno in the list, select it, and click Uninstall. Complete the uninstall process.
Step 4: Reinstall Juno for this user only
Run the Juno installer. When asked who to install for, select Only for me.

Select 'Only for me' during installation to install under the user profile.
Important: Do not select 'Everyone' or 'All users'. That puts the app back in C:\Program Files and the problem will recur.
You should now see
Juno opens normally and future updates run automatically without prompting for credentials.
A note on licensing
There are no licensing restrictions based on installation type. Installing Juno per user (once per user account) is fully supported - each user having their own copy is the intended setup for shared environments.
If that didn't work
l Confirm the uninstall removed the C:\Program Files\Juno folder. If it persists, a manual folder deletion or admin-assisted cleanup may be needed.
l If the "Only for me" option does not appear during install, the installer may be running with elevated privileges (Run as Administrator). Try launching it normally — double-click without right-clicking.
