Rdp unknown connection warning
How to understand and resolve RDP unknown connection warnings for a smoother remote desktop experience.
RDP shows "Caution: Unknown remote connection" warning before connecting
Use this article if: when you open your Remote Desktop (.rdp) file to connect to your Verito server, a security warning appears before the connection goes through. The warning is titled "Caution: Unknown remote connection" and asks you to confirm before allowing the connection. It looks like the screenshot below.

The new security warning Windows shows before opening an RDP connection.
How long this takes: about 3 minutes.
What's happening
On 14 April 2026, Microsoft released a Windows 11 security update (KB5083769) that changed how Remote Desktop handles .rdp files. With this update, Windows now shows a security warning before opening any Remote Desktop connection where the .rdp file isn't digitally signed by a recognised publisher.
This is a Microsoft security change, not a problem with your Verito server or your account. Anyone who installed the April security patch will start seeing this warning. You may see more cases of this over the coming weeks as the update rolls out.
What changed
Before the update:
● Opening an .rdp file connected immediately.
● Saved permissions for clipboard, printers, and devices were applied automatically.
● You didn't always see exactly what permissions were being granted.
After the update:
● You see the full connection details before connecting.
● Saved permissions may be turned off by default; you tick the ones you want.
● A warning appears about possible risks.
Windows is now double-checking before connecting to the remote server. This is meant to prevent you from accidentally giving access to a system you didn't intend to.
What to do (workaround)
This is a temporary workaround. The permanent fix is on its way (see the next section).
1. Download the registry fix
In your browser, go to:
A .reg file will download.
2. Merge the file into your registry
Find the downloaded file (usually in your Downloads folder). Right-click it and choose Merge. If Windows asks you to confirm adding the entries to your registry, click Yes.
Note: you must run this on the Windows PC you use to connect to your Verito server. Running it on the server itself will not help.
3. Open your RDP file again
Try opening your .rdp file as you normally would. The security warning should no longer appear.
You should now see
Your Remote Desktop connection should open directly, without the security warning, the same way it did before the Windows update.
Permanent fix on the way
Verito is working on a permanent fix. We will be digitally signing all .rdp files shared with customers so that Windows recognises them as coming from a trusted publisher. Once that's in place, this warning won't appear at all, and the workaround above won't be needed.
We will let you know when this is rolled out.
