VeritGuard on Apple Mac: Service Coverage and Differences
Last Updated on 23rd September | Published by Parnav Dagar
Short answer: Your Mac users receive the same protection and the same 24/7 support as everyone else. Three things work differently on macOS: web content filtering, the depth of performance tune-ups, and how disk encryption is handled.
Why: macOS is a deliberately restricted operating system. Apple limits how deeply any external tool can reach into it, which is good for security and does place real limits on what any IT provider can do.
1. Purpose and how to use this article
This article sets out how VeritGuard Managed IT Services operate on Apple Mac devices. It is written for firms running Macs either alongside Windows machines or exclusively.
Use Section 2 for what is unchanged, Section 3 for what behaves differently, and Section 4 for what is not available. Sections 5 and 6 cover disk encryption and the compliance points worth reviewing if your firm runs Macs.
2. Services that work the same on a Mac
The following operate on Mac devices with no meaningful difference from Windows. Availability still depends on your plan.
| Service | Notes |
|---|---|
| 24/7 technical support | Identical. Mac users raise tickets and call the same way, with the same response commitments. |
| Remote monitoring and management | The monitoring agent runs on macOS. Device health monitoring, hardware and software inventory, and remote access all work. |
| Endpoint detection and response, and antivirus | Deployed and actively managed on Mac. One component, web content filtering, is Windows only. See Section 4. |
| Endpoint backup | Deployed and monitored on Mac, with the storage allowance set by your plan. |
| NordLayer VPN | Native macOS application. It sits in the menu bar at the top right rather than in a Windows system tray, but functions identically. |
| 1Password | Cross platform. No difference. |
| Email anti-phishing (Pro and Elite) | Filters mail before it reaches the mailbox, so it protects Mac and Windows users identically. |
| Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace management (Pro and Elite) | Administered at the account level, independent of device type. |
| SaaS backup and SaaS monitoring (Elite) | Protect your cloud data directly, independent of device type. |
| Dark web credential monitoring (Elite) | Monitors credentials, not devices. |
| Employee cybersecurity training (Pro and Elite) | Delivered in the browser. |
| WISP assistance and FTC Safeguards audit | Documentation and process work, unaffected by device platform. |
3. Services that work differently on a Mac
| Service | How it differs |
|---|---|
| Operating system updates | Apple does not follow a fixed monthly release schedule the way Windows does, and Apple issues updates rather than patches. Minor releases typically arrive every six to eight weeks. We check Mac devices for available updates monthly, on the 1st Tuesday of each month, which comfortably covers Apple’s release rate. Your Windows devices remain on the weekly patch cycle. |
| Remote performance tune-ups | Tune-ups are performed on Mac, but they cannot go as deep as on Windows. macOS restricts the system level changes any external tool is permitted to make, so the range of optimization work available is narrower. |
| Backend maintenance actions | Many background actions we can run on a Windows device are not possible on macOS. In practice this has not affected service delivery, because macOS manages most of these functions itself. |
| General troubleshooting | Provided on a best effort basis. We support Mac users fully, and the diagnostic and remediation tools available to us on macOS are more limited than on Windows. |
4. Not available on a Mac
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| DNS Secure (web content filtering) | Not supported on macOS. On Windows, our endpoint security platform blocks access to categories of website including malware, phishing, gambling and adult content. This component does not operate on Mac. If web category filtering is a requirement for your firm, your Mac devices will need a separate solution. |
| BitLocker disk encryption | A Windows feature, and available only on Windows Professional edition. macOS has its own equivalent. See Section 5. |
| Third party application patching | Not provided on any platform, Windows or Mac. Keeping applications other than the operating system up to date remains your firm’s responsibility. |
| On site technician work | Verito is a fully remote provider. Not available on any platform. |
5. Disk encryption on a Mac
macOS includes FileVault, Apple’s built in full disk encryption. It is available on every modern Mac at no additional cost and serves the same purpose as BitLocker on Windows.
On both platforms, the decision about whether full disk encryption is enabled, and on which devices, sits with your firm. We will advise, and we can confirm the current status of each device during onboarding or on request.
This matters for compliance. If your Written Information Security Plan states that full disk encryption is in place across the firm, that needs to be true of your Mac devices as well as your Windows ones. Ask us and we will confirm where each device stands.
6. What this means for your firm
- If your firm is Mac only or Mac heavy: the core security and compliance services operate normally. The two practical gaps to plan around are web content filtering and the depth of performance tune-ups.
- If you run a mixed fleet: expect Windows devices to receive deeper maintenance and Mac devices to receive the same protection with fewer optimization options. Coverage is not tiered by platform, and Mac users are not on a lesser service.
- For your WISP and FTC Safeguards documentation: two statements commonly made in a security plan need a Mac specific answer. The first is web content filtering, which is not available on macOS. The second is full disk encryption, which is available through FileVault but is enabled at your firm’s decision. Review both before filing.
7. Getting support
Mac users receive exactly the same support as Windows users.
- General IT support: raise a ticket through your client portal or email itsupport@verito.com. Our 24/7 support desk is on (844) 629-9899.
- Suspected security incident: stop what you are doing and call (844) 629-9899 immediately. Do not wait and do not raise it by email.
- Questions about a specific Mac: contact support and we will confirm exactly which services are active on that device.
