How to Find Your Device Name on Windows or Mac

When you contact Verito support, we sometimes ask for your device name. It takes about thirty seconds to find, and this article shows you exactly where to look on a Windows computer and on a Mac. No technical knowledge is needed.
Why we ask for it
Your device name is the label that identifies your specific computer to us. Most firms have several computers, and the name tells us which one you are sitting at. That lets us look at the right machine straight away instead of asking you a series of questions first, which usually means a faster fix.
On a Windows computer
These steps work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Click the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen (the Windows logo).
- Click Settings. It looks like a small gear or cog.
- Click System in the list on the left.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and click About.
- Look for Device name in ‘Device Specifications’ section of the page. The text next to it is what we need.
Look for the label, not just the text
Your laptop or desktop model is displayed close to the device name in the same area of the screen, and the two are easy to mix up. The model describes the make of the machine, such as Dell Latitude or HP ProBook. The one we need is the entry sitting directly beside the words Device name.
On a Mac
- Click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen (the apple icon).
- Click System Settings. On older Macs this is called System Preferences.
- Click General in the list on the left, then click About.
- Look for Name at the top of the page. That is your device name.
If your Mac is running an older version of macOS and you do not see General in the list, click Sharing instead. Your device name is shown in the Computer Name box at the top.
What a device name looks like
Device names vary from firm to firm. Yours will usually look something like one of these:
- DESKTOP-4KJ9P2L
- SMITHCPA-FRONTDESK
- LAPTOP-JMILLER
- Janes-MacBook-Pro
Note it down exactly as it appears, including any dashes and numbers. A screenshot of the page works just as well if that is easier.
Two things people often mix up

| Your Wi-Fi network name | That names the network your office connects to, and every computer in the office shares it, so it does not tell us which machine you are on. |
Please do not rename your computer to something easier to remember. Changing the device name can interrupt access to your applications and shared files. If you would like it changed, ask us and we will handle it safely.
