Backup & File Recovery: What's Protected and How to Get Files Back
VeritGuard Knowledge Base | Backup & Data Protection
Your VeritGuard plan includes automated, cloud-based backup that protects the data on your computer. If a file is accidentally deleted, a laptop is stolen, or ransomware encrypts your drive, we can restore your data. This article explains what is backed up, what is not, how to request a restore, and how cloud backup (SaaS Backup) works for Elite plan clients.

1. How Your Backup Works
Our endpoint backup software takes a complete image of your computer every two hours. This means we capture everything on your local drive -- your operating system, settings, applications, and files -- so that if something goes wrong, we can restore your machine exactly as it was.
Backups follow a GFS (Grandfather-Father-Son) retention policy. In practical terms, this means your data is retained for up to 90 days across daily, weekly, and monthly recovery points. If you need to recover a file from last week or last month, we have it.
All backup data is encrypted and stored securely in US-based data centers. No action is required from you -- backups run silently in the background.
2. What Gets Backed Up (and What Doesn't)
| ✅ Backed Up | ❌ Not Backed Up |
|---|---|
| Your entire C: drive (local hard drive), including Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and any other local folders. Also includes your operating system, installed applications, and user settings. | Mapped virtual or network drives (e.g., a Z: drive connected to a cloud server like TaxDome). This data lives in the cloud, not on your physical drive, so it is not captured by the endpoint backup. |
| Any physical drive attached to your computer (including additional internal drives). | External USB drives that are not permanently connected. If the drive is unplugged when a backup runs, its data is missed. |
| Synced cloud folders (e.g., OneDrive or Google Drive sync folder) -- because these appear as local folders on your C: drive (some files may not backup due to permission issues). | Data stored only in the cloud (Gmail, Outlook online, SharePoint, Google Drive web-only files) unless you have SaaS Backup (Elite plan). |
Save your important work files locally -- on your Desktop or in your Documents folder. As long as files are on your C: drive, they are backed up automatically every two hours.
3. Backup Storage by Plan
| VeritGuard Plan | Endpoint Backup Storage | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | 250 GB per device | 90-day GFS |
| Pro | 500 GB per device | 90-day GFS |
| Elite | 1,000 GB (1 TB) per device | 90-day GFS |
4. How to Request a File Restore
If you need a file or folder restored from backup, contact Verito Support with the following details:
- File or folder name (and location, if you remember it -- e.g., "Desktop/Client Tax Returns/Smith 2024")
- Approximate date when the file was last available (this helps us find the right backup point)
- Device name (if your firm has multiple computers managed by Verito)
We will locate the file in our backup system and restore it to your machine. Most single-file restores are completed within a few hours. Full-machine restores (e.g., after hardware failure or ransomware) may take longer depending on data volume.
Contact: (844) 629-9899 or itsupport@verito.com
5. I Accidentally Deleted a File
Before contacting support, try these steps first:
- Check the Recycle Bin. Files deleted from your Desktop or Documents folder usually go to the Recycle Bin first. Right-click the file and select "Restore."
- Check cloud sync. If the file was in a OneDrive or Google Drive synced folder, check the cloud trash folder online -- deleted cloud-synced files are often recoverable from there for 30 days.
- If the file is gone from both, contact Verito Support. Since your computer is backed up every two hours, we can almost always recover it from a recent backup point.
The sooner you contact us, the more recovery options we have. Backup points older than 90 days may no longer be available.
6. SaaS Backup: Protecting Your Cloud Data (Elite Plan)
If your firm is on the VeritGuard Elite plan, your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace data is also backed up independently through our SaaS Backup service.
Why this matters: Microsoft and Google do not back up your data. They guarantee their infrastructure stays online, but if an employee accidentally deletes an inbox, or cloud ransomware encrypts your OneDrive files, Microsoft's native recycle bin empties after 30 days. Our SaaS Backup provides an independent recovery point with one year of data retention.
What's covered:
| Microsoft 365 | Google Workspace |
|---|---|
| Exchange Online (email) | Gmail |
| OneDrive for Business | Google Drive |
| SharePoint Online | Shared (Team) Drives |
| Microsoft Teams | Calendars & Contacts |
If you notice missing emails, contacts, or cloud-stored files, contact Verito Support immediately. The faster we know, the faster we can restore from the SaaS vault.
7. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to do anything for backups to work?
No. Backups run automatically in the background. Just keep your computer powered on and connected to the internet during business hours.
Q: How long does a file restore take?
Most single-file restores are completed within a few hours. Full-machine restores depend on data size and internet speed but are typically completed the same day.
Q: Is my backup data encrypted?
Yes. All backup data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and stored in secure US-based data centers.
Q: What happens if my computer is stolen?
We can restore your entire machine -- operating system, settings, and files -- to a replacement device. Call us immediately at (844) 629-9899 so we can also lock the stolen device and secure your accounts.
